In today's gallery, we take a trip back through our archives to the beginning of the 1980s.

In the year 1980, a multitude of historic events in world history occurred in a tumultuous year both on these shores and further afield.

Unemployment in the UK stood at more than 1.5million and the Government of the time, led by Margaret Thatcher was a year into a premiership that would become one of the most divisive in generations.

In world news that year, legendary Beatle was John Lennon shot and killed in New York sparking mourning rarely seen before worldwide for a pop culture figure, politics entered the Olympic games with the boycott by the US of the Moscow Olympics and Post-It Notes went on sale alongside domestic Camcorders and Fax Machines.

This was also the year of the Mount St. Helens eruption on 27th March.

On the box, millions across the world tuned in to find out 'Who Shot JR?' on the popular US soap Dallas.

In the world of film, classic horror film 'The Shining' was released in this year starring Jack Nicholson who, of course uttered those immortal words "Here's Johnny!" in the iconic Stanley Kubrick movie.

And who can forget the incredible 'Raging Bull' , directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese and starring the equally esteemed Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all-time.

In music that year, hits of the day included 'Call Me' by Blondie, 'Another Brick In the Wall' by Pink Floyd and Queen's 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love'.

A little closer to home, we see Cumbria in the midst of a year of undoubted uncertainty with political protest and striking present.

One can also see evidence, however, of signs of fun and laughter punctuating the difficult moments.

It cannot be denied that there is an unquestionable sense of community and togetherness evoked in today's gallery that will be as instantly recognisable today.
