THE newly reopened Avoncroft Museum in Bromsgrove has closed after a "vandal attack."

Windows were smashed at the Stoke Heath museum, which showcases historical buildings, yesterday evening (Saturday, May 1).

The inside of the Toll House and Nailers Cottage have also been severely damaged by intruders, with plates and ornaments broken.

The popular attraction had only just reopened yesterday following the national lockdown.

On Facebook, a post from the museum said: "It is with enormous sadness that we have to announce that the museum will be closed today, Sunday May 2.

"Unfortunately we were subjected to a vandal attack yesterday evening - there is a lot of work to be done by police and forensics, and by our small team to clear up a lot of broken glass throughout the site, and it's just not safe to open.

"I know you'll be disappointed, and so are we - yesterday was such a lovely day, and today promised to be fine as well - we hope you'll book to visit us again in the near future.

"If you have bought a ticket for today, we will be in touch shortly to reimburse you. Please don't call or e-mail - we will be in touch but we are just a very small team."

The team at the museum has also called on residents to get in contact if they know any local glaziers or boarding companies who are available today.

Residents and fans of the museum have shared their frustration and upset on social media.

One person said: "What is wrong with people? I was here with my family yesterday and had such a lovely day and the volunteers were excellent. No one deserves this."

Another said: "Absolutely appalling behaviour, had a lovely visit yesterday and we will be back again soon."

Another said: "This is so sad and awful to read, You have all worked so hard over the past 12 months to keep it going and open it back up safely for us all to enjoy."

People can make a donation to the museum via avoncroft.org.uk/make-a-donation.

On Twitter, Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid said: "Deeply upsetting to see this appalling vandalism take place at @AvoncroftMuseum

"My thoughts are with the staff and volunteers who would have been looking forward to opening again after many months closed. If anyone has any information, please call local police on 101."
