THE city's coronavirus infection rate is now the lowest it has been in more than six months, the latest figures have revealed. 

Worcester's infection rate was 13.8 cases per 100,000 people in the week up to April 6 - the lowest it has been since the second week of September last year.

Public Health England said 14 cases were recorded in the seven days - a drop of more than 61 per cent compared to the previous week.

The infection rate in Worcester in the week up to September 11 last year was 18.8 cases per 100,000 people with a total of 19 cases recorded.

Infection rates have also dropped in Wychavon, which includes Evesham, Pershore and Droitwich, to 17 cases per 100,000 people with the rate in Malvern Hills now in single figures at 6.4 cases per 100,000 people.

Worcestershire's overall infection rate has also dropped to 19.8 cases per 100,000 people.

Before hitting a six month low in what is the latest week of data available, the coronavirus infection rate in Worcester did reach an unprecedented high at the start of the year.

The infection rate in the city in the week up to January 8 was 815 cases per 100,000 people.

The 825 cases recorded in the city during that week has remained the highest during the pandemic.

Infection rates in the city did start to increase throughout September reaching three figures in mid-December and had more than doubled by Christmas Eve to 205.5 cases per 100,000 people.

The city's infection rate continued to escalate throughout the festive period and had reached 399 cases per 100,000 people by the end of the year.

The infection rate showed no signs of stopping throughout January reaching its peak at the start of the second week of January.

Whilst still high, the infection rate in Worcester fell to 325 cases per 100,000 people by the end of January - roughly 60 per cent lower than the mid-month peak.

The end of February saw the infection rate in Worcester return to double figures for the first time mid-December before falling to 34 cases per 100,000 people by the end of March and the latest drop means the infection rate is close to returning to single figures.

The latest Public Health England figures show the infection rate in Bromsgrove has fallen to 12 cases per 100,000 people with 12 cases recorded in the week, Redditch's infection rate is 37.5 cases per 100,000 people with 32 cases recorded.

Wyre Forest's rate is 32.6 cases per 100,000 people with 33 cases recorded in the week.
