A COMMUNITY football club is taking its annual fundraiser online amid the pandemic.

Welland Junior Football Club usually organises a yearly run around the village, to support the club with its role at the heart of community life.

Beginning March 6 - club members and supporters will be taking part in an epic 2264 mile run - the distance between all 92 football league clubs - and the club wants your help in racking up the miles.

A spokesman for the club said: “We’ll add 2021 - this year’s date - to the total miles, giving a target of £4285.

“The club will split the money between local foodbanks and keeping the club running - particularly with regards to coronavirus safety when we are allowed to get back up and running again.

"Covid-19 has had a massive impact in all our lives since March 2020. Football hasn't quite been the same since. "Limited numbers, social distancing, and the halt of football all together has meant we haven't been able to enjoy the sport we all love."

The spokesman said members of the public can join it to clock up the miles jointly with players and their families.

The spokesman added: “Lockdown has been difficult and we can’t wait to open again when we get the green light.

"Your support will be very much appreciated by everyone at Welland FC and we really hope we can make a real personal impact in the community."

Peter Hancock, a councillor representing Welland since 20210, said it is a “great club” and he wants to “encourage everyone who can to take part” in the fundraising effort.

The first stop the runners will ‘travel’ to is Cheltenham Town FC - a distance of around 25 miles.
