A NURSING home in the county wants your help in making the birthday of a resident extra special.

Ruth Thomas, who is a resident at The Lawns Nursing Home off the Main Road in Kempsey, will celebrate her remarkable 106 birthday on February 17.

A spokesman for the home said: “Family and friends are unable to join us to celebrate but we would like to mark this milestone by creating a video made up of 10 second clips to let her know we are all thinking of her.

“Can you please record a quick video and send it to us, whether it be children or adults singing happy birthday, memories of her or sending her a happy greeting.

“We would also like to achieve 106 cards to mark this occasion if you would like to send in your congratulations.

“Thank you to everyone for your continued support - we so appreciate it.”

Mrs Thomas was born in Hereford but moved to Kempsey when she was 20 to work as a parlour maid at the Elizabethan manor, Nash house, until she met her husband.

The pair took over the Queen’s Head pub in the village for three years until Ruth started running the local swimming pool in 1954 for 27 years with her husband.

Kempsey resident cllr David Harrison, who represents Kempsey on the Malvern Hills District Council, and has lived in the village for 68 years, was taught to swim by Mrs Thomas.

Cllr Harrison said: “I’ve known Ruth and her family since I’ve been a toddler.

“I want her to receive as many cards as possible - surely with the public's help we could get to 1000 birthday cards.

“I hope Ruth and her family will be pleased with what the public will do for her and not be too overwhelmed.”

Cllr Harrison has visited Mrs Thomas at the care home on previous birthdays, including her 100th.

Cllr Harrison joked: “I hope I can join her and reach 106 and be part of the club, but one thing is for certain - I won’t be a councillor at that point!”
