THE CEO of Malvern Theatres has talked of his “great sadness” of temporarily closing the venue just as it was allowed to reopen following lockdown easing.

The closure was announced on Boxing Day after two staff were confirmed to have the virus as we previously reported.

Nic Lloyd said: “The decision to close the theatre has not been taken lightly - the safety of our staff and customers is paramount.

“It is with great sadness that shows and films have to be cancelled when we have worked against all odds to survive such a difficult year.”

Malvern Theatres was awarded a total of £971,251 as part of the government’s £1.57bn Culture Recovery Fund to help get through the coronavirus crisis.

Mr Lloyd added: “Rest assured when we reopen, we will continue to do everything we can to serve our community and provide entertainment.”

After learning of the news, residents in the town took to the Malvern Theatres Facebook page to show their support.

Mark Jones who was due to appear in panto said: “I would like to thank everyone at the theatre Nic, Fred and all the tech crew for all the support and love they have shown in helping me to bring my show to Malvern.

“This decision is not taken lightly but the safety of everyone is paramount.

“I will be back for panto 2021 for sure and I know we will try our best to bring my one man show somewhere in 2021 as well.”

Julie Harding: “Absolutely the right decision for staff and audiences, best wishes to every one of you! “Mark, we are gutted for you as putting this show on for your fans was a real light in this dark year and I’m sure you put a lot of effort into it.

“Hold that show and put it on when life is back to a more normal.”

Susan Pullen said: “Sorry that theatres have closed but it’s kept everyone safe but hopefully will open again soon.

"I was glad to see [Beyond the Barricades] last week.”

The venue will be closed until at least January 6.
