AN outdoor activity centre in Malvern is warning of a "lost generation" of children's outdoor adventures.

Nick Hands, CEO of Boundless Outdoors in Malvern, is calling for more support to help businesses like his which have seen their income devastated by the coronavirus crisis.

He said: "We are able to provide a Covid-19 secure learning environment, as well as any school, restaurant or hotel.

"We have significant experience in risk assessment and the development of operating procedures to make sure Schools can employ a ‘bubble’ based operating model that is directly transferable to our residential centres.

"We have just written to all our local MPs to make these points and we are looking for their support in our sector’s struggle for survival.

"We hope they respond to our heartfelt calls as we seek to support young people."

Boundless Outdoors, set up and run by the team formerly responsible for the council-owned Malvern Hills Outdoor Education Centre, normally welcomes 5,000 young people a year, and Mr Hands added they have received a grant from the government to keep going during the coronavirus crisis.

Chair of Boundless Outdoors Ltd, Cllr Beverley Nielsen, also called on the government to clarify the position regarding residential stays for young people making them permissible from Spring 2021 as long as appropriate guidance is followed to reduce virus transmission.

She said: “Continuing uncertainty amongst our outdoor centres on whether we will be able to take outdoor residential visits by schools has held back our businesses all year.

“Our fears are for a lost generation who are losing out on boundless opportunities to experience and learn from the outdoors.

“Our revenues are standing at 20% of those last year. At Boundless Outdoors we’re in a good position because of our reserves, thanks to our great team, our highly experienced CEO, Nick Hands, and a great offer. But we can’t go on indefinitely like this.

"We need certainty to protect the opportunity we provide to around 5,000 young people each year to experience, enjoy and learn about the boundless outdoors.
