CLIMATE activists are taking part in the first of two days of protests in Worcester today.

Members of Extinction Rebellion are setting up flags and banners across the city today emblazoned with messages warning of the dangers of climate change.

This will be followed by a larger protest tomorrow in Cathedral Square, where members of the group will hold a socially-distanced “die-in” to raise awareness of extinct species.

In its newsletter, members were told: “We will be on the streets of Worcester City Centre to tell Worcestershire County Council to act now on Climate change.

“We will have multiple groups of six rebels taking to streets of city centre with an outreach person in each group.

“We will have three groups of ‘Faceless Bureaucrats’, a group dressed as bees, groups in normal attire as well as the guardians of earth.”

These protests are the latest to be held in the city by Extinction Rebellion by the group in the last 12 months.

Earlier this year, activists marched to the Guildhall and County Hall with letters for city MP Robin Walker and the county council.

They also marched to the Malvern office of West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin with similar messages.

Both MPs were in Westminster at the time, so missed the groups.

Last year, Extinction Rebellion members caused significant tailbacks through Worcester while staging a protest on Worcester Bridge.

A large group of protestors blocked Worcester Bridge displaying banners and signs and handing out leaflets to motorists.

The protest saw traffic across the city brought to a standstill, with other groups protesting in Malvern, Droitwich and Evesham.
