THE annual Dudley Trail walking event is set to return next month to celebrate its 40th year after it was postponed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The popular event usually takes place in May but was postponed earlier in the year due to the crisis.

Now organisers Dudley Council and the Lee Shaw Partnership have announced the 2020 event is set to go ahead on Sunday September 13.

The event will celebrate its 40th anniversary but will be scaled back from previous years as a safety precaution. Only two walks will be available including a six-mile gentle walk and a more challenging 13-mile walk, named the ruby route.

Anyone can take part, including children, although under 14s need to be accompanied by an adult, and dogs must be on leads.

Participants must also register online beforehand to take part in the six-mile walk which costs £2.50 and the 13-mile walk is priced at £3.

Councillor David Stanley, the Mayor of Dudley, said: "A few months ago, we were unsure whether we’d be able to celebrate the Dudley Trail’s 40th birthday so I am delighted we can confirm the event will go ahead and we can maintain the 40 year-long tradition albeit on a smaller scale.

"The trail is a wonderful experience and gives people the opportunity to see some areas of the borough that may not have seen before. This year people can enjoy the wonders of our canals, one of our nature reserves and our many country footpaths."

This year walkers are asked to follow some instructions on the day including to start their walk as soon as they have checked-in their arrival and to keep a safe distance from other pedestrians while on the trails.

Peter Davenport from the Lee Shaw Partnership, said: "Obviously everyone was so disappointed that the event in May was not able to go ahead as planned.

"It is really good that it is safe to proceed now with the six mile and 13-mile walks. We are so proud to sponsor the event again as we did last year.

"Through our offices we will be obtaining sponsorship for all staff members who are walking on the day and I am sure we will end up with a good result for our chosen charity, Action Heart."
