A SPECIAL art exhibition is coming to Malvern after councillors in the town agreed to a cash grant.

Representatives of the Dame Laura Knight Society spoke to Malvern Town Council asking for £500 to print and display some of her work around the town to commemorate the 50th anniversary of her death.

Evie Knight, from the society, told councillors: "She was one of Britain's most successful female artists and achieved great fame internationally. She was only the second woman to become a royal academician.

"Through Barry Jackson, founder of the Malvern Festival, she and her husband Albert were invited to the town for the festival and they returned every year until Albert's death in 1961."

Lots of Dame Laura Knight's work was themed around the Malvern Hills, with scenic views and some of her own favourite places, so the society applied for a grant from the council to put on an exhibition of 25 of her works along Edith Walk.

The exhibition will be open on July 7, the anniversary of her death, and it is hoped it will enrich the understanding of Malvern's artistic heritage.

Councillors agreed to the grant, which will be used to create the prints and paintings and set them up between Waitrose and Wilko.

Malvern Town Council has £7,000 available for grants of this type, with around £2,000 still in the coffers for future projects.

Following the exhibition, the prints will be available for use in future exhibitions in and around Malvern.
