A COUPLE were left devastated after raw sewage flooded into their home.

Ashmar and Michael Owen say the disgusting mess came up their toilet and affected their kitchen, utility room, living room and a new orangery and side extension.

And they are now forced to disconnect a sewage pipe every time there is heavy rain to stop it happening again.

They have blamed the situation on problems with a pipe which they stay happened after a £105,000 two-storey side extension by MSB Building and Carpentry services.

However, the builders say that there is nothing wrong with their work and the mess is due to a blocked drain.

The row has been further complicated after Severn Trent blamed the problem on ‘internal pipework’.

Mr Owen, 46, of Wensley Dale, Droitwich, said: “We are devastated by all of this.

“Every time we have a heavy downpour, we have to take the sewage pipe off, so it doesn’t come back up the toilet and into the house.

“In April 2019, we had a horrendous downpour of rain. I was called downstairs by my mum who was panicking as the downstairs toilet was overflowing with raw sewage into the downstairs of my home. I lifted the outside drainage inspection chambers; the sewerage then flooded my patio.”

Mrs Owen, 51, said: “We have worked so hard to get our dream house, but now we are finding ourselves paying for all this work over again.

“Someone is responsible for all this damage to our property. Our lives have been turned upside down and each time we have heavy downpours I am waiting for the next flood.”

The couple say their home insurers, Lloyds, say they cannot claim as it comes under the remit of ‘poor workmanship.’

But a spokesman from MSB Building Services said: “I can confirm that our company was contracted by Mr and Mrs Owen to build a two-storey extension and orangery which included drainage. We were contracted to do the shell only, under supervision and project management of Mr Owen himself.

“Mr Owen claimed to be an engineer and would be carrying out some of his own plumbing and electrical works. The entire build specification, drainage included was at the instruction and specification of the Owens.”

The builders say the mess was caused by a blockage - which can occur at any time - and it is not fair to blame them two years after they left the job.

They added: “In response to Mr and Mrs Owen’s allegations, we have instructed them to send all correspondence and communication via our public liability insurance. We gave the details of our insurance after they made contact claiming that there was £150,000 worth of damage.”
