AN airline is offering something different for 2020.
Royal Brunei Airline offers flights to lesser-known destinations
The carrier, which operates out of Heathrow in the UK, flies to a host of unique destinations in the Far East including Sandaka, Tawau and Bintulu in Malaysia and Surabaya in Indonesia to name a few. For those looking for a new experience, each of these destinations offers a unique break with wildlife, rainforests, outdoor pursuits and culture at the core.
• Sandakan from £529 return
Make 2020 the year to meet one of the most spectacular mammals - the Orangutan. Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary offers a chance to witness these wonderful creatures up close. The sanctuary helps to rehabilitate young orangutans before they are released back into the rainforest. Sandakan also offers many more attractions and activities including the Rainforest Discovery Centre, which acts are a gateway into the spectacular rainforest area, complete with raised walkways and guided tours. Also worth exploring is Sandakan’s Heritage Trail, where along this self-guided route visitors will take in a number of historical buildings and landscapes

When visitors can draw themselves away from the delicious treats at the Cocoa Museum for which Tawau is famed, the next best reason to visit has to be Maliau Basin, otherwise known as Sabah’s lost world. This remote and isolated region is is perfect for trekking and bird watching and contains 12 different types of forest. The Basin is home to thousands of species of birds, wildlife and insects plsu spectacular waterfalls and walkways. It can be explored day and night, each offering a chance to spy different animals.

Brush up on cultural knowledge with a visit to one of Surabaya’s many mosques, temples and monuments. Each gives an insight into Surabaya’s past and the different cultures that have shaped this modern town. It’s also a shoppers haven with dozens of malls and individual shops for picking up local and international items. Stepping away from the shops and markets and there are some lovely beaches where visitors may even find themselves sharing the sand with some cheeky local monkeys!

Take on a challenge with a trek in Similajau National Park. This unique park combines golden beaches, rocky outcrops, jungle streams and dense forests. It’s home to many species of wildlife including deer, squirrels, wild boar, porcupines, crocodiles and 185 species of birds. Away from the park Bintulu is a small town, mostly providing the perfect gateway to other parts of Sarawak.
