Here are the details of all those graduating from the University of Worcester today.
Student - Mary Morris
A popular nurse at Tenbury Surgery graduates from the University of Worcester today with a Master’s degree, 30 years after entering the profession.
Mary Morris, a familiar face at the town’s GP surgery, spent many years mentoring students from the University, before deciding to join them in the classroom.
“I have been mentoring pre-registration student nurses on their placements for many years and felt somewhat at an academic disadvantage to them as they would all be graduating with a degree, which was something that wasn't the norm when I trained in the late 1980s,” she said.
Mary first joined the University as a student in 2012, graduating in 2016 with a BSc (Hons) in Health Sciences.
“As my learning progressed and my role at work developed from Practice Nurse to Nurse Practitioner whilst studying for the BSc, I began to realise that I could further develop my knowledge and skills by undertaking the MSc Advancing Practice (Advanced Clinical Practice) degree,” said the 52-year-old.
Mary said choosing to study at the University of Worcester was an obvious choice.
“It has such a high reputation nationally for the quality of its healthcare courses,” she said. “The lecturers are all really knowledgeable about their subject areas and are approachable and supportive so that helps with the academic side of things.”
Since completing the Master’s Mary has been promoted to the position of Advanced Nurse Practitioner.
“As well as my employers and colleagues, my patients have been so supportive throughout my studies. I've been fortunate to be able work at the same GP practice for a very long time so a lot of people in the town and surrounding area know me very well,” she said.
“I'm now enjoying a break from studying but I haven't ruled out returning to the University to undertake a PhD or DHSc at some point.”
Student - Rachel Bray
A mother-of-three who has embarked on her life-long ambition to become a nurse, will graduate today.
Rachel Bray is a nurse in the Evesham Neighbourhood Team, providing care in the community.
“I am so proud to be graduating. It will be amazing to see all my cohort, and see how far we've all come, even since February when we finished our course,” said Rachel, of Winchcombe, Gloucestershire. “I am so proud to be a nurse, and still can't believe I've finally qualified. It is exciting and challenging; no two days are the same.”
The 41-year-old initially did a degree that led on to a career working with people with learning disabilities. She stopped working in 2005 after having her first son, who was very unwell, and became his full-time carer and stayed at home for eight years. She worked as a breastfeeding counsellor, a doula, supporting women with their pregnancy, and hypnotherapist. However, Rachel had always wanted to be a nurse and in 2014 she decided to pursue this career.
She applied to Worcester as she had heard about its reputation in healthcare and started two weeks later.
“It was really hard work, but I absolutely loved it,” she said. “It was such a brilliant course. The tutors were really supportive; there were some tough times that I had to deal with, but they were brilliant. To someone else thinking about a Nursing career, I would just say go for it, it’s never too late, and also take it a day at a time.”
She is now studying for a Master’s in Evidence Based Healthcare at Oxford University alongside her work.
Honorary Doctorate - Andrew Moffat MBE
Internationally acclaimed teacher and diversity champion, Andrew Moffat MBE, will receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Worcester today.
Andrew is Assistant Head Teacher at the Parkfield Community School in Birmingham, and the author of “No Outsiders in our school: Teaching the Equality Act in primary schools”, a resource which aims to prepare children for life in modern Britain through the development of a whole school ethos, where all children are taught they belong and are accepted.
In 2014, Andrew first developed the No Outsiders ethos to encourage children to be proud of who they are, whilst also learning how to respect diversity and appreciate difference. Since its inception, the No Outsiders programme has enjoyed great success, and it has now been adopted by many schools throughout the country. Andrew has also broadened the scope of the project to include family workshops in public libraries, to support the development of a wider appreciation of diversity and difference in the community. In 2017, Andrew was awarded an MBE for services to diversity and equality in education, and earlier this year, after 23 years in teaching, Andrew was one of only ten teachers worldwide to be shortlisted for the highly prestigious Global Teacher Prize.
As a result of his work to help build more tolerant, open and resilient communities, Andrew was invited to lead the march at Birmingham Pride in 2019 - alongside LGBT members of the City’s culturally diverse communities and in July he was awarded a Pride Award by Attitude magazine.
Andrew continues to teach and develop recourses to support acceptance of all differences and embed inclusive practice in primary schools.
Honorary Doctorate – Professor Dame Athene Donald DBE FRS
One of the world’s most distinguished scientists will receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Worcester today.
Professor Dame Athene Donald is Professor of Experimental Physics and Master of Churchill College at the University of Cambridge. Professor Donald was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1999 and was appointed a Dame Commander of the British Empire for Services to Physics in 2010. In the same year, she was also awarded the Faraday Medal by the Institute of Physics.
Professor Donald is a strong advocate of gender equality and a champion of women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine. From 2006 to 2014 she was the Director of WiSETI (Cambridge University's Women in Science, Engineering and Technology Initiative) and, from 2010 to 2014, was the University's first Gender Equality Champion. Professor Donald also chaired the Athena Forum from 2009 to 2013. A champion of equality issues for many years, she has used her personal blog to cover many issues relating to gender equality, as well as the broader working environment in universities, as well as occasionally writing for the mainstream media on these topics.
Her portrait, painted by Tess Barnes, hangs in the world-renowned Cavendish Laboratory, the home of physics at Cambridge.
A committed inter-disciplinarian, Professor Donald’s own research traverses the interface between physics and biology. Initially researching the electron microscopy of metals, she switched to investigating polymers whilst working as a post-doctoral researcher at Cornell University in the United States. Polymers, biopolymers, and more recently biological systems in general have formed the focus of Professor Donald’s research ever since.
Professor Donald currently chairs the Interdisciplinary Advisory Panel for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 and has been both a Trustee of the Science Museum Group and a member of the Science Museum Advisory Board. She previously chaired the Scientific Advisory Council for the Department of Culture, Media and Sports, and was also a member of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council from 2013-18.
