AS most of us raid lofts and cupboards in an attempt t find our cosy and warm winter clothing, one group view October as a good month to strip off and take the plunge into Boscombe sea.

The Spartans are a winter weather swimming group which meet between the months of October to April to brave the chilly waters.

“It’s hard to explain, but the sea’s got a bit of magic,” said Deb Madden-Broome during the group’s first dip of the season on October 3, 1999.

“The cold water is very invigorating.”

The Spartans spend no time lingering at the water’s edge – they race towards surf like little kids, watched by bemused Sunday strollers who wince and huddle further into their winter coats.

“People think you’re barmy but we don’t mind really,” said chairman Dave O’Donnell.

“The worst weather was the winter of 1961/63: the big freeze, when there were icicles on the railings.”
