A MAN has been arrested in Upton after he was reportedly seen tampering with cars in the town.

The man, in his 40s, was arrested between August 19 and 23 after he was reported by a member of the public.

The arrest follows a spate of car vandalism in the town stretching back more than a year.

PC Kevin Johns, from the Upton Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "The man was seen by a member of the public, tampering with three vehicles.

"That person was found by officers, arrested and charged with tampering with motor vehicles and criminal damage.

"We cannot link previous incidents to this person however, and we are still working with the council and other groups to take steps against car break-ins.

"We are going to be keeping up patrols around the town, and we want the public to keep an eye out, keep their cars safe and report anything suspicious."

A post on the Upton-Upon-Severn Town Council Facebook page on August 23, said that the man was arrested and charged.

At the full meeting of the town council on August 20, Mayor of Upton Henrietta Ross gave her report to councillors, in which she said she had received an email from a member of the public who was concerned about the recent spate of car damage in the town.

She said: "I am going to ask the Upton SNT to come and do a surgery and explain what they are doing.

“I am trying to arrange a meeting with PC Kevin Johns to have a chat about what they can do.

“We very much need them to lead it – all we can do is push what residents are telling us, which is that they want a lovely, quiet town.

“We want to reassure residents as to what they are doing.”

The call for a police meeting follows several incidents of car vandalism in the town in recent months.

In March this year, the Town Council discussed car park security after several cars were broken into, having their windows smashed.

The council has since added CCTV to the New Street Play Area, where several incidents have been reported.

In November, the town’s brand-new play park was set alight by vandals less than a week after it had opened.
