YOUNG people across the Malvern Hills will have the chance to learn the skills they need to cycle safely with the Bikeability programme.

The nationally-accredited course, also known as the 21st Century Cycling Proficiency programme, aims to develop better and safer cycling habits.

The sessions will be available to both adults and children, ensuring they gain practical cycle skills and have a better understanding of how to cycle on today’s roads, as well as giving them more confidence.

Starting on Tuesday, April 16, Level One is aimed at children aged seven years and older.

It will enable them to learn to control and master their bikes in a space away from traffic. Each course will cost £10 and will be held at Sport Dyson Perrins.

In June, Level Two will be aimed at riders aged 16-plus, who will be given cycling experience on roads, learning how to deal with traffic. Each course will cost £15 and will start at Victoria Park, Malvern.

A four-week summer holiday Bike Club has also been created for children who would like to gain practical cycle skills over the summer holidays consisting of Level One Bikeability and British Cycling Go Ride coaching. It will be held at Sport Dyson Perrins and will cost £25 for all four sessions.

More information on dates and times can be found on the Malvern Hills District Council website.

Rachel Vann, the council's physical activity and well-being officer, said: “Riding a bike safely on today’s roads is so important and taking part in a Bikeability class is the perfect place to begin.

"We provide support and practical advice that will help to build the confidence and skills of any budding cyclist.”

Participants must have a roadworthy bike and a helmet.
