RESIDENTS of a cul-de-sac in a Malvern housing estate are objecting to plans to build a new bungalow on green space there.

Sherlock Homes Developments Limited has applied to build the two-bedroom bungalow on land at Willow Grove, on the Cedar Avenue estate off Pickersleigh Road in Malvern Link.

But residents living on the close fear that the new building will help to make the estate overcrowded.

They are also worried about the reed bed sewage disposal system proposed by the applicant which they fear will create smells.

Last week, George Smith handed in a petition signed by residents to Malvern Hills District Council, urging the authority to reject the plan.

He said: “As there is no access to mains sewage the applicant proposes a small treatment plant intended to deal with domestic sewage arising from the property, with the outfall on to a reed bed in the back garden of the new house.”

The owner of another house, Paul Lambon, says: “The residents of 17, 19 and 21 will suddenly feel cramped and hemmed in, compared to the light, bright feel there is there now.

“Whilst this plot is small, it does provide a little village green to the cul-de-sac which does enhance the unique character of the area.

“The sewerage system on the estate was designed for the population of the 1970s. Today, it is overburdened and inadequate.”

But a Sherlock Homes Developments Limited spokesman said he was confident the building would not cause problems to the residents of the existing properties on the estate.

He said: “The building makes use of the changing land heights within the existing cul-de-sac. The elevations and roofline are sited below that of neighbouring properties.”

And he said the proposed sewage system would be more than adequate to cope with the property without causing problems for the neighbours.

Malvern Hills District Council will decide whether to approve or reject the planning application for the bungalow. A date for that verdict has not yet been set.
