A CONCERT in Malvern has received best wished from an award-winning composer.

Howard Goodall, best known for his work composing themes for TV shows such as Blackadder, Mr Bean and the Vicar of Dibley, tweeted "How lovely. And a beautiful place for the concert too. Anyone local to Malvern do go!" in response to the news about Malvern Festival Chorus’s forthcoming performance of his work, 'Eternal Light', in Great Malvern Priory on Saturday, March 16.

Malvern Festival Chorus’s musical director, Jonathan Brown, said: “As we approach our centenary season in 2019-20, we are delighted to have received personal support from Howard Goodall and to present a programme which demonstrates the range of the contemporary choral music repertoire.

"We are particularly excited to be joined by celebrated soloists from the world of opera, baritone Quentin Hayes and tenor Richard Coxon, as well as by soprano Alison Ponsford-Hill who sang so beautifully for us in our November concert."

Reflecting the theme of Eternal Light, the concert is entitled Darkness and Light and focuses on contemporary works from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Howard Goodall’s work is complemented by a setting of The Lord’s Prayer by Czech composer Leos Janacek and culminates in Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Five Mystical Songs, composed in 1911, a setting of verses by 17th century poet George Herbert.
