WEST Mercia Police’s drink drive campaign was brought to the public in Crowngate at the weekend.

Police and the Safer Road Partnership organised a joint event in the shopping centre on Saturday that attracted hundreds. The event included a stall with useful information and giveaways, a child seat safety display, and the main attraction - a drink drive simulator in which people could have a go at driving between cones wearing goggles that give the appearance of being drunk.

Sergeant Stuart Allen pointed to figures that show that in West Mercia, over the last three years, 17 people have been killed and 103 injured in collisions linked to drink or drugs.

Sgt Allen said: “The overarching message is aiming to reduce the amount of people being killed on our roads. The campaign runs throughout the year, but heightened this time of year.”
