MALVERN 45PTS, OLD SILHILLIANS 6PTS

OLD Silhillians fulfilled this pre-season final friendly after The Guanos were unable to provide a side.

Although grateful to the opposition, the Malvern team showed little gratitude on the field, supported by a good sized crowd, refreshed by the beer and cider festival that provided a lively background at Spring Lane.

After going behind to an early penalty Malvern set the tone for the afternoon, winning a line-out deep in Old Sils territory, putting in a 20 metre driving maul for Shaun Lancett to sprint in to carry on where he left off last season.

After conceding another penalty, Malvern continued to dominate in the forwards and nullify any OS attacks with stalwart defending by the back line. The three quarters then cut loose after a Malvern scrum, new boys Ted Lang and James Gwynne combining in the tight channel, a final pass inside setting Richard Fleming through for a very classy try, converted by Ryan Watkins. Consolidating on the lead, Malvern dominated in every position, recycling the ball well. On the half hour Dave Merlin showed all his experience and strength to power through for a score, Watkins bagging the extras. With half time approaching, there was no let-up Malvern twice taking the ball to the visitors' line, twice giving Lancett scoring opportunities that he accepted with enthusiasm.

At 29-6 at the break, the game was won and Malvern took the opportunity to bring on players from the bench, but the players' hunger was evident as they continued to pummel the game young Silhillians side. A beautifully judged chip ahead by Watkins saw Lang burst through the defence to catch and score under the posts and Watkins convert.

Despite a rearguard action by the OS defence, Malvern were camped in opposition territory for the rest of the match. With 10 minutes to go Lancett bagged a fourth try, then Fleming signed off a solid Malvern performance after a slick passing movement amongst the backs.
