THE final phase of flood alleviation work in Upton is set to begin.

Earlier this year, Worcestershire County Council carried out works to raise the A4104 in Upton-upon-Severn to reduce the impact of flooding in the future.

Phases One and Two of the scheme were completed ahead of schedule and work on the final phase was held off to ensure traffic was kept as smooth as possible during the important festival activities over the summer months.

Cllr Tony Miller, cabinet member with responsibility for environment, said: "It's great to hear that the festival season has been a big success for the area this year and I'm glad we could do our part by pausing works during this busy period to minimise any traffic disruption.

"Work now needs to continue to ensure the final part of the scheme to reduce the likelihood of flooding can be delivered as soon as possible."

Work on the final phase of the scheme is planned to start on Monday, September 10. It is hoped it will be completed by early spring 2019.

The works will see a number of culverts of different sizes installed under the road to help speed up the drainage of water during any flooding.

The road on this part of the A4104 will then be raised, resurfaced and relined, similar to the works completed in Phase One of the scheme.

The first two phases saw the installation of a new dedicated right-hand turn into the marina, wider footpaths, upgraded street lighting and a newly resurfaced and white-lined stretch of raised road.

Setting up on the site will start on Monday, September 3, and temporary traffic lights will be in place from Monday, September 10.

The two-way lights will be in use for most of the time during the work, however, they are only required on a much shorter stretch of road than for the previous two phases.

This flood alleviation scheme in Upton forms part of a programme of schemes delivered by Worcestershire County Council to reduce the risk of flooding on key sections of the highway network throughout the county.
