THE Champagne flowed during a special ceremony marking the reopening of Upton's Lower High Street public toilets.

The loos had been boarded up for more than a year after they were closed by Malvern Hills District Council.

However, the bad memories were flushed away on Friday as more than 100 people gathered to celebrate their reopening in style, with a live jazz band and Champagne donated by local pubs and restaurants.

The ceremonial ribbon cutting was performed by Serena Croad, the new leader of Malvern Hills District Council.

Upton town councillor Jackie Surtees said bemused visitors, in town for the annual Oliver Cromwell Jazz Festival, had to be informed of the background to the ceremony.

"The Conservative party promised to reopen the toilets if they were elected. They were, and they have," she said.
