A YOUNG woman was rescued from the Malvern Hills by fire fighters and ambulance crews after falling and injuring herself.

The emergency services were called out shortly after 3.30pm to the southern slope of British Camp.

Paramedics rushed to the scene, and called out the fire brigade to help them get the woman to safety.

Crew commander David Whitehead of Malvern fire station said: "We took our Land Rover and Argo Cat off-road vehicles, but in the end carried her down of a stretcher."

The woman, thought to be in her 20s, was suffering back pain after her fall and paramedics gave pain relief.

"We got her down to the land ambulance which was parked in the British Camp car park at about 5.30pm, and she was taken away," he said.

"We quite often get called out to help the ambulance service when people get into trouble on the hills. It's a good example of inter-service co-operation."

Murray McGregor of West Midland Ambulance Service said a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance were sent to the scene.

He said: "The patient was on the far side of the reservoir, so we called for the fire service in case we needed their off-road vehicle.

"The patient was suffering from lower back pain and it was quite a long and complex job to get her to the ambulance, and she was then taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital."
