When the Olympic torch came to Malvern in 2012, hundreds of people along the main road were filled with excitement. A young man came along carrying the torch, cheering broke out, cameras clicked. It was going to be a year of Olympic victory in the UK.
There was similar expectancy in Jerusalem when Jesus rode into the city on a donkey. The crowds waved palm branches and shouted joyfully. The King had arrived, carrying with him the hope of victory. A few days later Jesus was killed on a cross and the world turned into darkness. The people's hopes were dashed.
Politicians are hoping to stir up support and change things for the better in the UK. Unless God builds a better future, hopes will collapse. Cheers for Christ, risen from death, will promote love in our society and will open up the heavenly city where God reigns for ever.
