MY WIFE and I moved here last July from North Somerset and have found Malvern to be a great place to live.

But we’ve been somewhat bemused by ‘the great wheelie bin furore’.

In North Somerset(and Bristol)the council has for many years collected the general waste in wheelie bins, and glass, paper and cardboard separately in a plastic box provided;food waste in a special small secure plastic container (not everyone has the facility or desire to compost).

They also collectlarge amounts of garden waste in robustlarge retainable bags provided free of any collection charge.

There are no long queues in the spring and summer of cars taking garden waste to the localtips.

The counciltax there is not excessive, so cost does not seem to have been an issue.

There are also lots of steep hilly neighbourhoods inWeston, Clevedon and Bristol.

And no one ever complained that somehow wheelie bins were inherently more unsightly than the previous black bin bags that were prone to being torn apart by animals and birds.

Am I missing something here? If so, no doubtlots of your readers will write in to put me right.
