A RESIDENT of a nursing home at Upton-upon-Severn celebrated her 106th birthday on Wednesday.
Gladys Slack lived in the Peterborough area for much of her life but moved into the Boynes Nursing Home a few years ago to be close to her son and daughter-in-law, who live in Malvern.
Son Stuart Slack said his mother worked for a corset maker for many years, before taking over a pub that had previously been run by her own parents.
“She is a very good needlewoman, dressmaking, knitting, and crocheting, all that sort of thing,” he said.
“She’s always been interested in a bit of gardening and is quite interested in football as well.
“I think this is because the pub her parents ran had its own football team.”
Mrs Slack celebrated the occasion with a lunch with her son and his wife Pat, and a little get-together with staff and other residents at the Boynes.
“My mother has never smoked and drinks moderately, although she does enjoy the occasional glass of port,” said Mr Slack. “She’s never been seriously ill and I suppose that’s one reason she’s reached the age of 106.”
