SUSTAINABILITY and the challenge of caring for the planet is the theme of the Malvern Science and Faith Weekend which takes place at the beginning of March.

The event includes talks, discussion and activities on topics of scientific interest.

Last year’s inaugural event focused on Charles Darwin and his contribution to evolutionary theory.

This year’s explores the theme of sustainability from a multi-faith perspective as well as offering science workshops for children.

Keynote speakers are Satish Kumar, editor-in-chief of Resurgence and Ecologist magazine and a founder of the Schumacher College International Centre for Ecological Studies.

Rianne ten Veen, aidworker and member of the Islamic Foundation for Ecology and Environment Sciences, is also on the list, as is Rosalind Selby, principal of Northern College, Manchester, and chairman of the team that produced the report on climate change theology, Hope in God’s Future.

A children’s activity day takes place on the Saturday with curriculum-based workshops for children led by Keele University School of Physical and Geographical Sciences.

Also included is a morning of activities with the RSPB, Project EARTH (Environment and Religions Transformation Hub) and other organisations, as well as an afternoon seminar led by Project EARTH.

Organiser Andrew Webb said: “It has been good to see how different local organisations are working together to deliver what promises to be an exciting weekend on an important topic.”

The weekend opens with a showing of the award-winning film The Economics of Happiness and concludes with a music event, Songs of Harmony.

Malvern Science and Faith Weekend takes place from March 1-3.
