On Tuesday evening, about 25 friends of Mr E B Probert dined at the White Horse and afterwards made him a presentation on the occasion of his retirement from the proprietorship of the hotel. After dinner, the chairman proposed the health of Mr Probert and said his friends desired to show him in a tangible way their friendship for him. He had been a very obliging and courteous landlord, and commanded the esteem of all his customers. As a sportsman he was always to the front, especially in connection with local sports such as cricket and athletic gatherings.

Many homes in Malvern this week have been completely cut off from the mains water supply by frozen service pipes - those connecting the mains with the house. Malvern Urban District Council has received between 200 and 300 call for help and an experimental method of defreeezing, whereby an electric current is passed along the frozen pipes, has eased the position. Alternatively, a lorry with water tanks is touring some areas, while in other instances, standpoints have been connected to hydrants, For many, however, it has been a case of relying on a neighbour's goodwill.

A couple fighting for the right to drive to their isolated country cottage at Old Hills will find out next week whether they have won their two-year battle. Andrew and Christina Smith began legal action in 1986 against Malvern Hills Conservators after stones were used to block the track leading to their 400-year-old cottage. The couple are claiming damages against the Conservators who in turn counterclaim the Smiths have trespassed across their land to reach the cottage and in the process damaged turf, Judge David Wilcox will give judgement on Tuesday.
