ENTREPRENEURS from a Malvern school have been following in the footsteps of Willy Wonka after turning their classroom into their very own chocolate factory.

Key stage two pupils at St James’ CE Primary in West Malvern spent the last term designing and creating their very own chocolate brands and products, which they are now selling for charity.

The children, aged between seven and 11, set up 10 separate ‘companies’ and each set about creating their own tasty treats.

As the end of term approached they then had to present their brands and products ‘Apprentice-style’ to a panel of judges, who had the difficult decision of picking two brands for production.

More than 150 orders for the winning ideas – “a fizzy cola bar with crazy popping candy” and “a sensational box of fruity chocolate” – were taken in just two days and the children immediately set to work to ensure they were fulfilled.

Pupil Hannah Blackburn said: “We had to up our game as reality hit that people really had bought our chocolate products and were expecting to collect them in just a week’s time. We had to get moving, fast, and stick within out budget to make enough profit.”

The inspiration for the project came from Louis Barnett, a young chocolatier who created his own chocolate company at the age of just 14 and now, seven years later, sells his products around the world.

The pupils were delighted therefore when he called in at the school for a visit to see how they had been getting on.

Pupil Luke Meredith said: “He saw all the hard work we have been doing this term and he was very impressed indeed.

“We hope to meet with him again next year and organise a big event.

“We can’t thank him enough for the inspiration he has given us.”

Proceeds from the sale of the chocolates will be going to St James’ link school in Tanzania.
