100 YEARS AGO.

An interesting and, in some respects, unique event took place in West Malvern on Tuesday night when Mr Alfred Watson was presented with an illuminated address and a substantial purse of money on his retirement from the Headmastership of the National School. For close on forty years he has occupied that position with conspicuous ability, and during that time there have passed through hundreds of old boys, who now occupy good positions at home and abroad.

50 YEARS AGO.

Mr Leonard March, a former vice-chairman of Malvern Young Conservatives, was elected secretary of the Malvern Town branch of the South Worcestershire Liberal Association at its inaugural meeting on Wednesday. Afterward, Mr March disclosed that he had been generally dissatisfied with Conservative foreign and local government policy. He added, "I have always been a Liberal at heart."

25 YEARS AGO.

Fears that a whole stretch of the Severn valley east of the river near Upton could become a site of mineral extraction are behind Ripple residents' rejection of applications for sand and gravel workings near their village. Members of Ripple Against Gravel Extraction, a seven-member committee appointed to draw up village objections, wants residents, friends, users of the river and other interested bodies to voice concerns.
