THE latest match on the Malvern United Angling Association's calender was the clubs pairs match, new for this season.

The contest was due to be fished on the club's stretch of the Avon at Birlingham, but due to recent heavy rains the river was unfishable so it was switched to the pool at Mathon.

Conditions for the time of year were good, with warm sunshine for most competitors.

Drawn on peg 18, Mike Spragg began the contest fishing for roach and skimmers on the pole, of which he managed a few small fish, before switching attention to the pools resident carp. Pole fishing corn and maggot at 11 metres he landed five carp to win the match with 14-10-0.

Second place went to John Wagstaff who was drawn on island peg 22, John used feeder tactics to land four carp for 13-12-0.

Consistent Neil Humpage took third spot with two good carp and a few small fish on the pole for 11-9-0 from peg 6.

The pairs contest turned out to be a runaway victory as the first and second placed anglers Mike Spragg and John Wagstaff had been paired together in the draw.

Pairs result (top three). 1 Mike Spragg and John Wagstaff, 2 Chris Loveridge and Ian Goddard, 3 Mike Cooper and John Shaw.

The next contest is the first Winter League match of the season on Sunday, November 12, on the Severn at Holdfast, draw 9.30am fish 10-2pm.
