SHAKESPEARE’S Globe, in partnership with English Touring Theatre, is bringing its award-winning production Anne Boleyn to Malvern Theatres following sell-out runs at the Globe in 2010 and 2011.

The play, written by Howard Brenton, sets out to challenge the traditional assumptions of Anne Boleyn as a pawn manipulated by an ambitious father or a sexually licentious predator, even a witch.

Instead Brenton puts a very different Anne on the stage; a witty and confident woman with controversial religious ideals, taking on the vicious world of Tudor politics.

She conspires with the exiled William Tyndale to make England Protestant forever.

Jumping forward 70 years, the newly crowned James I discovers Anne’s copy of the controversial Tyndale Bible, which goes on to become one of the key reference texts for his common ‘authorised’ Bible, which celebrates its 400th anniversary this year.

Jo Herbert, who played Rosalind in the Globe’s production of As You Like It last year, stars in the title role, while James Garnon (Anonymous, The Real American: Joe McCarthy), who received critical acclaim during both seasons at the Globe, reprises his role of King James I.

Julius D’Silva also returns as the scheming Thomas Cromwell and Colin Hurley as a poisonous Cardinal Wolsey.

Henry VIII will be played by new cast member David Sturzaker (Cool Hand Luke, West End).

Anne Boleyn is at Malvern Theatres between Tuesday and Saturday, April 24-28 and tickets cost from £16.50, under 26s £8.
