THE number of new coronavirus cases recorded in the county increased by almost a quarter in a week.

A total of 2,271 new cases were recorded in Worcestershire in the week up to September 28 - a rise of more than 23 per cent compared to the week before.

The latest Public Health England figures show cases surged in Malvern Hills, Wychavon, Redditch and Wyre Forest in the week.

A total of 197 cases were recorded in Malvern Hills in the same week - a rise of 44 per cent compared to the week before - and 527 cases were recorded in Wychavon, which includes Evesham, Pershore and Droitwich, where cases increased by 45 per cent compared to the previous week.

A thirty-one per cent rise in Wyre Forest saw a total of 414 cases recorded in the same week.

A total of 215 cases were recorded in Worcester - a rise of two per cent - and cases fell slightly by just under two per cent in Bromsgrove to 414.
