HEAD coach Paul James is hopeful Worcester Wolves will be able to retain up to four players for the 2018-19 British Basketball League campaign.

Contract talks have been under way since February and James said he had received “some positive” responses from members of his nine-man squad.

It has been a revolving door at the University of Worcester Arena in recent years with numerous players coming and going.

Only Alex Navajas and Ashton Khan decided to stay on last summer leaving James to rebuild his team.

But Wolves’ boss will now be looking to keep many of his current crop together to create continuity for next term.

“We are talking to players,” James said. “There have been some positive ones (discussions) and other players who want to wait and see and maybe explore other options which is fine.

“But talks have been ongoing since February and hopefully we can retain two, three or maybe four of them.

“We have got some really talented players and if we can bring some of them back it puts us in good stead for the start of next season.”

Wolves have had plenty of disruption this season with Jermel Kennedy leaving in October and Khan departing in late December.

Rob Gilchrist and Michael Ojo came in as replacements but Worcester suffered a double blow in March.

Elvisi Dusha and Brandon Parrish resigned for “breach of player rules” before George Marshall was snapped up to boost the squad for the final run-in.

Despite the changes Wolves reached the BBL Cup final and made the play-offs after finishing the regular season in seventh position.

“It has almost been like having four seasons in one due to players coming in and leaving,” James said.

“I am actually amazed and proud of the players who have been here all season long by how they have kept going despite all this disruption around them.

“We made the play-offs and made a final. We would have liked to have finished higher in the league but we are where we are and hopefully we can make a good run now.”

Wolves host London Lions in the quarter-finals first leg tonight (7.30pm).
