Worcestershire to honour their record run-scorer Don Kenyon

Kenyon’s widow Jean and daughter Sue Jackson will oversee the ceremony on Monday, August 7, on the second day of the Specsavers County Championship match with Sussex at New Road.

His achievements had previously been recognised via the Kenyon Room which is now housing the Foley’s coffee house and eatery.

But chief executive Tom Scott had pledged at the time Kenyon’s name would be honoured in another appropriate venue at the County’s headquarters.

Current chairman Stephen Taylor confirmed the decision during the Worcestershire Old Players Association (WOPA) Day at New Road.

Kenyon skippered Worcestershire to the 1964 and 1965 County Championship titles and scored 37,002 first-class runs.

Scott said: “Don is a massive part of Worcestershire County Cricket Club’s history and it is fitting we acknowledge his achievements in this way with level two of The View being renamed after him.

“Not only was Don the club’s record run-scorer he was a superb captain. If you speak to his ex-team-mates they will all echo that and had massive respect for Don.

“When Foley’s opened I was determined another area of New Road would honour and recognise Don’s achievements. The View is an appropriate way to do that.”

County managing director Jon Graham said: “The word legend is overused in sport but it is a perfect description of what Don achieved for Worcestershire.

“To score so many runs for the County is an incredible achievement but he was also a brilliant captain as well in addition to becoming an England selector.

“We feel The View is a fitting tribute to what Don did for this County and his achievements will never be forgotten.”

Jean Kenyon, who celebrated her 90th birthday earlier this year, still takes an active interest in events at New Road.

She regularly attends the monthly meetings of the Worcestershire Cricket Society in the Graeme Hick Pavilion with her daughter.
