THERE is “nothing untoward” about handing players one-year contracts, insists Worcester Warriors boss Alan Solomons.

Ten members of Solomons’ squad have penned new deals with several of those signing up for one more season at Sixways.

Prop Gareth Milasinovich became the latest of those while centre Wynand Olivier, back rower Marco Mama and flanker Alafoti Fa’osiliva have also agreed to extend their stay until the summer of 2019.

But Solomons stressed players who had put pen to paper were “happy” with their contract situation and the Warriors chief felt he was putting together a “very good squad” for next season.

“There was an option to extend on Gareth’s contract and that was exercised,” Solomons said.

“There is nothing untoward about it.

“There will be a variety of reasons why a player will have an extension of a year or not.

“What I am very pleased about is we are building a very good squad for next season.”

Flanker Sam Lewis and centre Ryan Mills have signed undisclosed-length ‘long-term’ deals while scrum-half Luke Baldwin revealed his contract kept him at Warriors for a further three campaigns.

Worcester have also recruited eight new players ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

Among those, Doncaster Knights number nine Michael Heaney, London Scottish hooker Isaac Miller and Jersey Reds utility back Scott van Breda have signed one-year contracts.

But Solomons said: “If you analyse our squad we have got plenty of continuity so that’s not a problem.

“I am absolutely happy with where we are and the players are happy with the situation.

“I am pleased with the way recruitment is going and we are pretty well down the line with it at this point.”

Solomons said he was also conscious about filling the club’s quota of English-qualified players.

In 2016, an eight-year £225million funding agreement between clubs and the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was signed to encourage the development of English Qualified Players (EQP).

Each top-flight club will receive a multi-million-pound payment each season from the RFU but only if they meet the strict criteria relating to the number of players in their squad who are eligible to play for England.

“Gareth (Milasinovich) qualifies in June so next season he will be EQP,” Solomons said.

“I think one is always aware of that situation when you want to build a squad.

“It is about getting a balance in everything that you do.”
