DIRECTOR of rugby Gary Gold hasn’t explored whether a lack a confidence is the reason for Worcester Warriors’ dismal away record.

Warriors have lost all 10 away Premiership fixtures this term and head to Newcastle Falcons in their final trip on Friday, April 28 (8pm).

Warriors recorded a crucial victory at Falcons last term but have won just three of their last 32 away Premiership matches in total.

Gold says he will have a discussion with the players about their preparation for away matches if he extends his stay at Sixways beyond the end of this campaign.

“I don’t know if I would say I am worried (about our away record),” said Gold, who arrived at Warriors at the end of January.

“I have only been away from home three times with Warriors and we won at Cardiff (Blues) in the Anglo-Welsh Cup.

“I don’t see a difference in our preparation for matches on the road but there’s a difference in results obviously.

“Not being able to win on the road for a year is not a good thing.

“In the off season it’s probably worth the coaches having a sit down and a discussion about that.

“Off the top of my head I am not sure what needs to happen.

“I am not sure whether the problem is in the week-to-week process or whether the problem lies elsewhere.”

Gold shook his head in frustration at the final whistle in Warriors last away match which ended in a disappointing 36-26 defeat at Sale Sharks.

Warriors paid the price for too many errors and conceded 10 points towards the end of the match after Sale went down to 14 men.

“I really thought from a preparation point of view we would be prepared to go away even to a place like Sale which is a tough venue,” said Gold.

“Maybe there’s a lack of confidence in the group.

“It’s not something I have necessarily explored because I didn’t perhaps want to open up a can of worms when I didn’t think there was one.

“But it’s worth a discussion with the playing group to find out if there are things that need to be done differently.”

Warriors failed to pick up away point before Gold’s arrival but bagged two bonus point at Wasps and a try-scoring bonus point at Sale.

“I think confidence breeds confidence,” said Gold.

“But maybe too much is made of it.

“Maybe we just haven’t won games we should have won – perhaps it’s as simple as that.”
