WORCESTER Warriors have a “job to do” and shouldn’t make a “big deal” of playing away Aviva Premiership matches.

That’s the message from director of rugby Gary Gold as Warriors bid for a first away league triumph since beating Harlequins at The Stoop last March.

Gold believes second-bottom Warriors should “back” themselves in Saturday’s trip to Franklin’s Gardens to tackle eighth-placed Northampton Saints (3pm).

“I don’t think we should make a big deal of whether it’s at home or away from home,” said Gold.

“We have a job to do. We need to back ourselves.

“We went to toe to toe at home to Northampton (earlier this season) and narrowly lost and we were particularly unhappy with some of the things that happened in the game.”

He added: “When you play against good teams on their own patch if you make mistakes they will punish you.

“We are professionals. It’s four white lines and a patch of grass. It’s 15 opponents and I don’t think we need to over think that. We have a job to do.”

Gold revealed Warriors will be looking at “a couple of things” as they prepare for the weekend’s clash.

“We are looking at our match-day preparation and trying to change that up a little bit with time of departure etc but, by and large, we have a job to do,” he said.

“We have to go there and do the job and hopefully come away with points.”

Warriors picked up a try-scoring bonus point in last weekend’s action-packed 48-32 home defeat against high-flying Exeter Chiefs.

But Gold said Warriors’ defence was “not good enough” as Chiefs ran in seven tries, including three in quick sessions when the hosts were reduced to 14 men.

“I was really keen to see an upturn in performances and improvements in certain areas but I was disappointed with our defence against Exeter,” said Gold.

“They are a very good team and are going to score a couple of tries against you but some of those tries were really soft tries against us.

“I wouldn’t have expected anybody to score tries like that against us.

“For at least four of their tries it was poor execution by us.

“We can’t have that and that’s where we have to harsh on each other. It was not good enough.”

Gold continued: “Exeter can score tries against you that you won’t have an answer for and I am fine with that. But I am not fine with the manner in which some of the tries were scored. We can’t have that.”
