MALVERN climbed back to mid-table in National Three Midlands by beating a struggling Broadstreet side 42-25 at Spring Lane.

The Coventry visitors went ahead with a fourth-minute penalty from stand-off Scott Harman after Malvern infringed at the first scrum.

But it did not take long for the hosts to redress the balance as Adam Dixon’s penalty gave them a line-out eight metres from the try-line.

Tom Longley’s break took him close and the ball was rucked back quickly for Nick Miller, returning from a long injury lay-off, to take the ball at pace and power over for the lead.

Malvern’s pack signalled their intent with a 20-metre driving maul against the beefy Broadstreet unit, taking them to the line once more.

After a five-metre scrum, full-back Luke Milton hit the ruck and Longley found a gap to score and give Dixon the conversion.

Broadstreet kicked a penalty on 20 minutes but soon after their forwards went over the top of a ruck and Dixon restored the advantage but was then sin-binned for a late tackle.

Although the penalty fell short, the ball was knocked on behind the Malvern line to give Broadstreet a five-metre scrum, allowing prop Ben Dawes to go over for a try.

Still a man down, Malvern stuck to the running game, moving the ball quickly with Miller and Adam Billig making frequent inroads.

The forwards put in another driving maul and Chris Griffiths came off the back to feed James Southall for a score on 33 minutes.

But, on the stroke of half-time, two needless penalties were conceded to let Broadstreet drive over for a score from number eight Chris Zutic with Harman converting.

Malvern looked in command but turned round with only a two-point advantage.

This was soon increased as Dixon put over a 40-metre penalty five minutes into the half.

Three minutes later, Billig intercepted and ran in from his own 22 to give Dixon the easy extras.

The purple patch continued on 51 minutes when Miller was involved and flanker Simon Daws sped through the gaping defence to finish arguably the move of the day.

Dixon’s boot was again sure and Malvern went 19 points clear.

The game became scrappy for 20 minutes with a mixture of injuries and a yellow card for each side.

The impressive Nick Thatcher scored for Broadstreet with four minutes left.

But Malvern had the last word as they stole the ball and Southall added another try in the corner to cement an impressive victory.

The Spring Lane men now have a break ahead of their visit to Hinckley on Saturday, December 3.
