GUARDING against complacency is in-form Malvern’s aim tomorrow when they travel to South Leicester, according to director of rugby Andy Longley.

The Spring Lane side made it four successive victories in National Three Midlands when they defeated Scunthorpe 29-28 via a dramatic last-kick triumph.

This bonus-point victory leaves Malvern in ninth place in the table with 39 points and well on course for a top-six finish.

Now, Malvern’s fine run will be handed a tough test when they go to Wigston Road to face second-placed South Leicester (ko 2.15pm).

However, openside flanker Simon Daws misses out after suffering a broken hand at Scunthorpe. He will be replaced by Christian Edwards.

Longley said: “It’s important we don’t get carried away.

“A top-six finish would be an excellent achievement for us this year. The club is ambitious but we have to keep its foundations in place.

“Our start to the new year has been beyond what people expected.

“It was a great result against Scunthorpe, it was very close.

“They dominated much of the territory and possession in the second-half but we came back very strongly.

“The spirit in the side has been excellent. Indeed, stand-in captain Matt Williams and Adam Billig said that in the post-match talk at Scunthorpe.

“South Leicester have gone on this season and become a very strong side. They have a big pack and are quite direct.

“As we have no free Saturdays until the end of the season, it will be a case of survival of the fittest squad. “Every game is really competitive and hard-fought.”
