CENTRE Will Butler says Worcester Warriors’ coaches are taking him out of his “comfort zone” this season in a bid to elevate his game to the next level.

The Ledbury ace admitted he was left stunned when he was named Worcester Cavaliers captain for their Premiership Rugby A-League clash against Wasps on Monday night.

But the 19-year-old felt the decision to give him the captaincy was all part of Warriors’ efforts to bring him out of his shell.

Under Butler’s leadership, Cavaliers registered their first victory this term, running out 32-6 winners at Sixways.

“It is always nice to get a five-try win,” Butler said.

“It was a bit of a shock (to be named captain), but it was a privilege to do it.

“It was a little test for me in my personal development, but it was nice to be pushed me out of my comfort zone and see if I could cope with that while playing my position in the team.

"I am not the loudest bloke in the world, so I tried to lead by example and get the boys to enjoy what they were doing.”

A number of first-team players lined-up for the Cavaliers including Bryce Heem, Carl Kirwan and Dean Hammond.

And Butler, who joined Warriors’ set up aged 14, said they helped him get messages across to his teammates.

“There were a few senior players out there which eased me into the role with some of the other lads talking up,” he said.

“When it came to the forward pack, I am obviously not the best scrummager in the world so it was nice to have some of the older guys guiding me through those areas of the game.”

Butler made his senior debut last season when Worcester travelled to Russia to face Enisei-STM in European Challenge Cup.

But an injury sustained during the match forced him to miss most of the campaign.

Butler starred for England this summer as they reached the final of the World Rugby Under 20 Championships.

And he said he was now hoping to secure his place in the side for Warriors’ Anglo-Welsh Cup opener against Sale Sharks at Sixways next Friday.

“It will be really nice to try to be involved in that and we will see how it goes,” Butler added.

“I am liking the way the coaches are thinking at the moment, but we will wait and see.”
