MALVERN Rugby Club won 47-7 in Midlands Two West (South) in their first visit to Coventry side Dunlop.

The Spring Lane outfit started well from the first whistle as they secured the kick-off and Tom Hale took off at speed down the wing to score the opening try.

Ben King converted and shortly afterwards was successful with a penalty to make it 10-0 within five minutes.

The hosts responded from a penalty to score a well-worked converted try but that was the end of their brief comeback as Malvern took full control.

Joe Budd and Richard Fleming combined well to take play deep into the home half before a clever cross-field kick and chase saw Hale storm in with King converting.

The hosts, weakened by call-offs due to the World Cup, struggled to contain a faster and fitter Malvern side, who employed a patient build-up in the pack before unleashing the speed of the backs.

Another King penalty stretched the lead before Craig Freeman went on a 30-metre burst with the ball finding Hale, who duly obliged with a hat-trick try.

King’s sure conversion gave Malvern a 20-point cushion.

Dunlop put in a determined drive and reached the Malvern five-metre line but the visitors stole the ball to clear and won a penalty 45 metres out, which King just missed.

George Roberts went on a few strong runs deep into the Dunlop defence as the pack continued to secure good ball but there was only one more score before the break.

Second-placed Malvern’s pack sucked in the Dunlop defence and won a penalty that King slotted over for a 23-point half-time lead.

The second period started in the same way as the first with Malvern pressing deep into Dunlop territory and going through the phases with only several unpunished offside moves enabling them to withstand the onslaught.

However, it was only a matter of time before Malvern scored again.

After a line-out 10 metres from the Dunlop line, the pack put in a driving maul and George Withers touched down.

As the Malvern back row of Sam Parsons, Jack Longley and Will Gough dominated loose play and the breakdown, they stole the ball and cleared it downfield.

From the line-out, which looked secure all day, the ball went to Roberts, who stepped inside and evaded tackles to score a fine try with King bagging the extra two points.

As Dunlop tired, King went in for a try after a move down the narrow side to bring the proceedings to a close.

Malvern have a rest from league duty on Saturday and instead travel to Camp Hill for a North Midlands Shield quarter-final (2pm).

Meanwhile, Bromyard earned a bonus point at home to Uttoxeter from a 32-27 defeat in Midlands Four West (North).

Tries from Jamie Gibbons, Gareth Griffiths and Jordan Fulbrook saw the hosts trail 20-15 at the interval.

In a see-saw second-half, Ollie Barrett crossed the line for mid-table Bromyard and a penalty try was converted by Freddie Anthony but the away team ran out winners.
