WORCESTER Warriors are sweating over the fitness of scrum-half Charlie Mulchrone for Friday’s Greene King IPA Championship play-off semi-final second leg against London Scottish at Sixways (7.45pm).

Mulchrone (ankle) left the field after just 14 minutes of Worcester’s 27-22 narrow first leg success at Scottish last Saturday and is seeing a specialist this week.

Both full-back Chris Pennell (knee) and centre Max Stelling (hamstring) have been ruled out of the second leg but fellow back Andy Symons (concussion) has now passed the RFU protocol for assessing head injuries.

Experienced forward Jonathan Thomas is also available for selection after serving a one-match RFU suspension for picking up three yellow cards.

Referee Ian Tempest will be the man in the middle at Sixways.

On Mulchrone’s injury, Warriors director of rugby Dean Ryan said: “I don’t know what the situation is until he sees a specialist. This is a test of the squad and we’ve always known that. At the moment, he has not been ruled out. We are trying to gather information from people who know more than me.”

In response to a question about Pennell’s injury, Ryan said: “Chris is still rehabbing his knee from the injury against Bristol and he won’t be available this week.”

Answering a question about Stelling’s injury, Ryan said: “He’s got damage to his hamstring and is rehabbing to see how fast we can get him back. He won’t be available on Friday.

“We have got some concerns over injuries but we are working hard to try to see where they go.”

Ryan revealed experienced Wales international Thomas, who was a notable omission from Warriors squad for the first leg, had served a one-match ban.

Warriors edged the first leg by five points after scoring a penalty try in the final play which was converted by fly-half Ryan Lamb.

But Jonny Arr, Mike Williams and James Percival were all yellow-carded in the match.

Ryan said: It was important we got through the first leg and it’s important we are five points ahead and are coming home and feeling quite strong about the performances we’ve been able to put in at home.

“This tie is over two legs and winning the first game doesn’t win us anything.

“There were elements in the first game we were a little bit frustrated with.”

Ryan added: “The yellow cards were a feature but we’re on top, coming home and will have a big crowd.

“This means we have to perform and see if we can get into the Championship play-off finals.”
