LEDBURY Rugby Club recorded their first away win of the season with a 19-0 triumph at basement boys Manor Park in Midlands Three West (South).

The Ross Road side are eighth in the 12-team table with a five-point buffer over local rivals Upton.

Skipper Rob Anscomb won the toss at the Coventry club and opted to play downhill without the glare of the sun.

Ledbury back rower Nat Jenkins immediately put them on the front foot, making early valuable yards before being brought down.

The Herefordshire side put good phases of play together but poor passing and handling let them down.

Park enjoyed much bags of the possession and territory in the opening 20 minutes but Ledbury were first on the scoresheet.

Solid phases saw scrum-half Scott Matthews get quick ball out to the backs, who overlapped to good effect and centre George Bennion went over before converting.

Jenkins again claimed the kick-off and Ledbury were swiftly into the hosts’ 22.

Chris Stokes supplied winger Matt Hallett, who sprinted for the corner and fended off his opponent with Bennion unable to covert from out wide.

Ledbury’s coaching staff wanted to claim the full five points but Park enjoyed more good spells with ball in hand in the second period.

The visitors’ forwards worked hard on the fringes in defence before Ledbury’s third try came from inside their own 22.

Great defence from the pack saw hooker and player-of-the-match Dave Wargen make a vital turn-over.

Matthews showed fine decision making with Gary Nicholson and Stokes combining for Hallett to storm in from 80 metres down the right wing.

Bennion converted to complete the scoring as Ledbury could not produce the bonus-point try.

Wargen shone with strong tackling, helped take a few scrums against the head, threw well at line-outs and claimed crucial turnovers.

Ledbury host fifth-placed Old Wheatleyans on Saturday (2.15pm) and hope for another classic encounter against their old rivals.

Meanwhile, Newent kept pace with leaders Coney Hill in Tribute Western Counties North after a 30-7 home win over Bristol side Barton Hill.

James Dean, Charlie Gellert, Brett Gardner and Will Mansfield scored tries with Ross Webb adding two conversions and two penalties.

Newent are set to visit fourth-placed side Bristol Harlequins on Saturday.
