DIRECTOR of rugby Dean Ryan admitted he was frustrated – more than relieved – after Warriors edged to a 32-29 victory against Jersey.

Ryan felt that Warriors’ dominance in the scrum and drive had not been rewarded with penalties after Jersey infringements went unpunished.

“It was a wet night and we were so domi - nant up-front and we should have got some reward for it or allowed the law to take care of it,” said Ryan.

“It didn’t. Jersey had nine consecutive set-piece offences in the first-half without a yellow card and we get three against us and we’re under a warning. It’s just bi - zarre.

“I don’t think it was a great game for a whole host of reasons and the second-half just disappeared.

“Full credit to Jersey but we are incred - ibly frustrated that we are not allowed to drive and it’s becoming a repeat week to week.

“That was the sort of game we had to work out how to win without necessarily doing the right things.

“Jersey did not contest a drive in the second-half and it’s quite clear in the law, that when you back out from a drive it’s a penalty yet we ended up having to play and play.

“It just makes the game a very strange place. We don’t have a strike move and then have 15 people on their feet and it be - comes a mess. That is not what the contest is about. I don’t mind smart coaching but the law is quite clear and we’ve spoken re - peatedly about it.

“We have a very powerful drive and a very powerful scrum and, at the moment, everyone is working out ways in which they don’t have to face it.

“On a wet night it is forcing us to play a game that is not suitable to the conditions and hence the high error rate.

“You should not have a drive taken away from you and be forced to play a game that doesn’t suit the conditions. We are disap - pointed with ourselves and full credit for Jersey for making it a scrap but we are also disappointed in the circumstances in which the game ends up.

“At half-time, that’s a game that we have got full control of and all we had to do in the second-half was get field position and drive it over and finish.

“We will be hard on ourselves because we need to understand the competition and sometimes it’s about dealing with things that are getting in the way.”

Ryan said he was very pleased with his forwards and, particularly, Darren O’Shea.

“It was a powerful performance upfront and the same front row stayed for 80 min - utes. Darren O’Shea caught the line-outs.

It was great to see Chris Pennell and Jona - than Thomas coming back.

“JT told everyone to be clinical in the fi - nal 10 minutes to make sure we got down there to win a penalty and get out. We had a lot of ascendancy in a lot of areas so there’s frustration that we can’t apply that ourselves or get reward for it. It was a relief that Lamby hit the last kick or we would be talking about different things.”
