NEW-look Worcester Warriors began their warm-up for the new season with an encouraging 23-6 victory over Ospreys at Sixways.

Summer recruits Sam Smith, who scorched over inside 20 seconds, and Nick Schonert, along with Ben Howard, scored the tries, while Ignacio Mieres converted one and kicked two penalties.

Two first-half penalties from the boot of Sam Davies was all a mixed Ospreys side had to show for their efforts.

The Welsh region were in touch at the break, trailing 11-6, but Warriors pulled clear after the restart with Schonert and Howard crossing the whitewash inside the first 12 minutes of the second period.

A raft of replacements, including 10 from Worcester, disrupted the flow of the game towards the end but Warriors prevented the visitors from adding to their tally.

An interception by Smith after just 20 seconds saw him scorch over to make the perfect start to his Warriors career but Ignacio Mieres, who so often struggled with the boot last season, missed the conversion.

A fifth-minute penalty from Davies got Ospreys on the scoreboard but he missed a chance to put them ahead four minutes later with another central kick.

Soon after, Andy Symons broke forward and fed Max Stelling but he was stopped in his tracks by Tom Grabham short of the line.

Davies was successful with his third penalty for a 6-5 lead before Mieres landed one of his own in the 22nd minute for 8-6.

Dan Evans was Ospreys' chief threat, the full-back burrowing his way through on a number of occasions and also spilling the ball over the line to Warriors' relief five minutes before half-time.

However, a Mieres penalty with the last play of the half took Warriors into the break leading 11-6.

Five minutes into the second-half and Schonert was bulldozed over the line in the corner for Worcester's second try but Meires' eminently kickable conversion fell short.

Howard showed the Ospreys defence a clean pair of heels to power over for his side's third try in the 52nd minute, converted by Mieres for 23-6.
