Under 17s hit the top after two victories
1:40pm Tuesday 8th October 2013 in Rugby
MALVERN top the North Midlands Under 17s League after a 31-19 victory at Old Halesonians made it two consecutive wins.
The 39-0 away success over Worcester in the opener gave the Spring Lane side a great start which they followed up successfully in Hagley.
However, with seven players missing, Malvern’s midfield was cut through by Old Hales who took an early lead in the third minute.
But the visitors’ response was swift and two tries from debutant Myles Edwards plus scores from Marcello Cossali-Francis and Harri Claxton saw Malvern 24-12 up at the break.
Jack Travis had added two conversions and, alongside scrum-half Laurie Essenhigh, brought calm at halfback.
A fifth try came early in the second period with a textbook move from the training ground and new centre Lewis Williams on the scoresheet.
Travis converted again.
Old Hales got one score back but the collective Malvern spirit shone through.
Another newcomer Tom Harnden impressed in a 70- minute shift and never shirked a tackle.
The core of the Malvern set-up have played together for a number of years and are maturing as players with warm-ups and initial drills done alongside the first team with Nick Tisdale and Rob Cook.
Gareth Richards and Vince Hill then take the backs and forwards coaching sessions for the versatile squad.
Max Hill has shifted successfully from inside centre to influential blindside flanker, while Tom Crooks has packed down in all three rows of the scrum.
Newcomer Louis Boffy made his debut on the left wing and then switched to hooker.
Malvern host Dudley- Kingswinford on Sunday, October 13, and Bromsgrove on Sunday, October 20, with 11am kick-offs.
