Malvern look to rebuild
12:13pm Tuesday 10th September 2013 in Rugby
MALVERN Rugby Club anticipate a season of consolidation in the Midlands One West.
They were comprehensively relegated from the tough National League Three South West division in 2012- 13 and are keen to get their squad back on track this season.
A spokesman said: “The coaching team see this season as one of consolidation and rebuilding.
“Last year’s move into the south west stripped the club of several players who were unable to commit to the extra travelling involved, ending with relegation after five years in National Three.”
Malvern enjoyed three good pre-season work-outs.
Having taken Hinckley close in a 10-7 defeat, Malvern thrashed Essex outfit Woodford 39-15 but a mixed side came up short against well-drilled Matson 38-19 last weekend.
Head coach Tisdale and backs specialist Rob Cook worked hard in training this week to correct basic errors against their Gloucester opponents from the Western Counties level. The nucleus of last season’s Malvern side remains but there have been several additions, including player-forward coach Alan Keylock who has figured for Worcester, Stourbridge and Sutton Coldfield.
With coaching, Malvern have enlisted Worcester Warriors hooker Ed Shervington, who will pass on front-row skills, while England under 18s coach Peter Walton again lends his experience.
Skipper Mustow is looking forward to his new role with enthusiasm and Malvern hope he will lead from the front as ever.
With all three senior teams playing competitive rugby, their teenagers will be in the new North Midlands Under 17s League.
They have come through the junior section under the tutelage of former players Gareth Richards and Vince Hill. The final step in their transition to men’s rugby will see training with the seniors on Tuesdays.
- Malvern have their first Lunch with a Legend of the season when ex-England player and former Worcester coach Nigel Redman is the guest speaker.
The lunch is on Saturday, October 19, prior to the game against Barkers Butts and the £19 ticket includes match entry. They are available from the clubhouse.
