MALVERN marched into the North Midlands Plate Under 16s semi-finals after overcoming Veseyans 27-10 in a bruising Spring Lane encounter.

The hosts put on an excellent display, showing tenacity in the tackle, including one superb effort from flanker Ieuan Richards, and tactical awareness.

Malvern kept the ball tight and in hand as much as possible into the firsthalf wind before playing for territory after the break.

Facing a bigger pack, Malvern’s forwards were disciplined in the set-piece with solid scrums and impressive line-out work.

Veseyans took the lead with an unconverted try but a Jack Travis penalty reduced the lead to two points before he launched fine kicks from hand in the second period.

Prop Tom Crooks showed strength to twist out of tackles for a try and then centre Max Hill swooped with both converted by Travis who also added a penalty.

Veseyans reduced the deficit with a try before Malvern replacement winger Max Holt cut inside to cross under the posts for a final converted effort.

In September 2013, Malvern will play in the North Midlands Under 17s League to complement the academy headed by Andy Longley.
