Draw for Ledbury

LEDBURY Rugby Club opened 2013 with a hard-fought 13-13 home draw against Cheltenham North in Midlands Three West (South).

Having lost 31-10 in Gloucestershire in September, thirdfrom-bottom Ledbury were satisfied with their progess despite being frustrated at not winning.

The visitors, playing with the slope, led through an early unconverted try and extended their lead soon after.

Stout defence kept Cheltenham’s large forwards at bay and Ledbury full-back George Bennion kicked two penalties in difficult conditions.

Just before the break, Jock Welch scored a try from a forward drive and Bennion’s conversion strengthened Ledbury’s position with the second-half elements in their favour.

They increased their territorial advantage through fly-half Kieram Hallam pegging Cheltenham back but paid for failing to take chances with the visitors’ equalising try three minutes from time.

With the last kick, Ben Smith’s long-range penalty fell just short for Ledbury who visit Evesham in the league tomorrow.
